Solid, reliable, secure, super easy to use and not too shabby on the eyes, the YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe from Yale is ideal for domestic use. It is compact and portable enough to save some space, but still heavy enough to deter theft.
Look; having a safe in your home is not just for rich people anymore. You don’t need to have a posh safe behind a hidden compartment in your bookshelf or inside an expensive piece of art.
With the booming UK tech scene, increased burglary rates, and insurance costs that are shooting through the roof, people are looking for ways to protect their assets and avoid being victims of theft.
That’s why our focus today is on one simple, top rated home security option for your personal items, valuables, and weapons. I’m talking about the Yale YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe.
But is this safe worth the extra pounds or is it just another overrated security cabinet? Let’s find out in this balanced and comprehensive Yale certified home safe review.
Yale certified home safe review
What are you buying?
Since they invented and patented the pin tumbler lock that almost every modern lock draws its design from, Yale is without question one of the leading lock brands in the world. That’s why I automatically thought Yale when I wanted something reliable. The YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe is one of Yale’s crowning achievements.
The YSM is among the new safe collection that is designed to be more robust, reliable, thicker, easier to use and definitely harder to crack. It’s quite clear that Yale put a lot of effort towards making the exterior as good looking as possible, but I think they could have done more.
This home safe measures 30 by 35 by 25 centimetres and weighs in at 20Kg; making it compact and portable enough to save some space, but still heavy enough to deter theft.
When it comes to protection, the YSM/250/EG1 home safe creates the perfect balance between brains and brawns. For starters, the exterior boasts of an extra thick body and door with 3mm and 8mm steel thickness respectively.
To make sure that all your items are safe, Yale used a laser cur door that barely leaves a gap at the edges. Similarly, the door hinge is reinforced whereas the key areas incorporate tough armor plating.
But what had me really impressed was the over the top locking mechanism. This not-so-humble home safe actually incorporates 22mm motorized locking bolts and six double-bitted mechanical override locks. All these are controlled by a digital keypad that lets you input a personal code with over 100,000 possible combinations.
How easy is it to use?
For something with such a hefty price tag, you’re damn right I expect it to be so easy to use that it virtually works itself.
Well, the YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe still requires you to input your code, but that’s pretty much all the work you have to do.
An even this is made much easier by the convenient keypad and blue backlit display. Thanks to the auto-opening function that works when the correct code is entered, the safe door opens all on its own.
Inside, the walls are lined covered in full felt lining to keep all your documents, valuables, and items in mint condition.
What I didn’t expect was the array of LEDs packed inside this relatively small home safe. The YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe actually includes 3 LED lights to help users see what they’re doing.
Of course, all these electronic features require some sort of power source. Yale included a battery as well as an indicator that lets you know when the battery is almost out.
However, the epitome of user friendliness on the EG1 has to be the simple mounting solution. The manufacturer was thoughtful enough to include pre-drilled mounting holes with protective floor pads and fixing bolts to get the safe mounted firmly.
Any accessories included?
Once you’ve made your purchase, you can expect to receive the following items:
- Yale YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe
- 2 keys
- DIY fixing kit
- Instruction manual
Pros
- Versatile electronic lock with numerous combinations
- Incredibly easy to use
- More reliable with a higher cash rating
Cons
- The home safe is not high security; it could be easily broken into with the right tools
- Not fire rated
Anything else you should know?
The YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe might be able to protect your valuables, documents, and weapons from easy access, but it sure as heck won’t do anything in the event of a fire.
That’s because the safe is not fire rated. As such, you might want to look for something stronger and more costly if you’re looking for a safe that will protect your items in the event of a fire.
Conclusion
Solid, reliable, secure, super easy to use and not too shabby on the eyes, the YSM/250/EG1 Certified Home Safe from Yale is ideal for domestic use. Not only will it help you keep your passports, cards, title deeds, cash, jewellery, documents, and weapons safe from exposure, but it also addresses all your anti-theft issues as well.
What’s more, it comes ready to mount so someone doesn’t take the whole thing away. Sure, it may not be the most impenetrable safe in the UK, but it is the perfect hidey-hole for items you would rather not just leave lying around.
