What are you buying?

I’ll be honest with you – At that price range, I expected just a fancy tin box with a lock. But boy did Rottner prove me wrong. When they say she’s heavy duty, they really mean it.

The ROTTNER Sydney40 Fire Safe is constructed using thicker, double walled solid steel to make it as impenetrable as a home safe can be. By the looks of it, this safe could comfortably withstand 1-2 hours of attack with regular burglar tools. But with today’s advanced power tools, a smart thief should be able to break in using half that time.

Fortunately, the incredible fire resistance and state of the art locking mechanisms more than make up for this. In between those heavy duty double steel walls is a layer of robust, fire resistant concrete that makes this one of the most resilient fire safes in the UK.

According to EN 15659 LFS Testing standards, the ROTTNER Sydney40 Fire Safe is fully capable of withstanding extreme home and building fires for up to an hour. This means that your identification, licences, deeds, certificates, papers, hard drives and other items will remain unharmed if the fire can be put out in time.

Stepping away from the fire resistance features, the Sydney40 Fire Safe from Rottner also sports quite the security technology. This includes the latest LCD digital electronic lock with twin metal bolts to boot.

Not only does the double-locking mechanism guarantee total security, but the keypad enables you to choose from over 100,000,000 different code possibilities. It’s safe to say that the only way you’re cracking this safe is with an incredible amount of brute force.

How easy is it to use?

Like I always say; any safe that doesn’t require a key is as simple as it gets. Think about it – a key can be copied, and don’t even get me started on how many lost fingers we’ve heard about due to biometric locks. This particular fire safe just requires your own code that can be changed every once in a while to maintain higher security levels. With over a hundred million different possibilities, not even your own kids will be able to guess the right code.

Similarly, the fact that the Sydney40 Fire Safe looks mighty sleek and professional makes it ideal for both home and office use. However, don’t just leave it lying around on countertops. It might be slightly heavy at 37 Kg, but that’s still light enough for one man to carry off.

That’s why Rottner was thoughtful enough to include a bolt-down kit with their best-selling safe. Just pick a wall, ceiling, or concealed spot on the floor and bolt the safe down as firmly as possible to ensure it stays there. However, I’m a known advocate of auto-open doors as well as some interior lighting. Unfortunately, this safe offered none of those two options.

Any accessories included?

Once you receive your package, you can expect the following items in the box:

  • ROTTNER Sydney40 Fire Safe
  • Fixing kit

Pros

  • High-quality construction
  • Heavy duty, thick double steel walls act as a theft deterrent
  • Fire protection for up to 1 hour
  • Advanced digital lock with twin bolt reinforcement

Cons

  • For such a price, Rottner just included pretty basic home safe features

Anything else you should know?

It might have just been my experience, but the ROTTNER Sydney40 Fire Safe was a real pain in the neck to install. For starters, you have to lower the entire thing down onto the bolts to get it fixed to the floor, wall or shelves. At almost 40 Kg, that was quite an arduous task. However, you can rest assured that it’s not coming off once you get it bolted.

Conclusion

Robust, solid, heavy duty and packed with the latest security technology, Rottner definitely delivered a reliable safe for home and office use. Sure, it’s not a bad theft deterrent, and it certainly pays for itself in the long run. But it’s the high levels of fire resistance that make the Sydney40 fire safe one of the best selling models in the UK. At a full hour’s protection against extreme heat and fires, what more could you ask for?
